Resources: Tooling

Our state-of-the-art tooling enhances Anderson Drilling's equipment capabilities. Our tool inventory includes open flight earth and rock augers, drag core barrels, roller core barrels and dual-walled air barrels. We have drawn on tool making engineers from all over the world to provide the best tools available for our business. Our tools have been carefully engineered for the variety of drill conditions that we encounter throughout the western U.S.

Rock Augers
Rock augers are similar in configuration to the earth augers, however they are fitted with teeth that have a carbide tipped insert. These augers are also referred to as "bullet augers" by some, and are primarily used in very hard material or rock. Because of the capacities of many of the drill rigs in the Anderson Drilling fleet, these tools have been very successful in augering very difficult drilling conditions.

Earth Augers
Earth augers represent the most common tool used with our drilling machines. These augers are constructed to very high, heavy-duty specifications. All of the tools are fitted with either a 5" or an 8" Kelly stub, depending upon the torque of the machine running the auger. We have a wide variety and selection of earth augers ranging in size from 24" to 15 ft. diameter.

Clean-Out/Drilling Buckets
These tools are used primarily for underwater or slurry construction of drilled shafts. The drilling buckets are used to help capture the drill cuttings during the excavation process, and the clean-out buckets are used during final cleaning of the shaft bottom to remove any loose material. We have one of the largest selections of these types of tools in the world, and have built most of them ourselves.

Barrels
We have developed various types of core barrels over the years. Generally, they can be divided into two types of tools. Our "drag" barrels are constructed with the carbide-insert, bullet teeth that are set up in a saw-toothed arrangement around the perimeter of a heavy wall shell. These tools can be used in various rock formations, and are often used in relatively short core runs, where equipment size is limited or rock thickness and/or penetration requirements are minimal. The other types of barrels that we use are double-walled, air circulating, roller barrels. These systems use a high volume air-blower to move the cuttings away from the cutter head while drilling. Carbide tipped rollers or disc cutters are used to crush the rock. These tools are ideal in extreme hard rock conditions, or where longer core runs and thicker layers of rock are identified. All of these tools have been manufactured in-house, and many years of practical experience has gone into perfecting them. We have a full range of sizes from 18-inch diameter, through 15½-foot diameter.
